The UK has been convinced by successive governments that they are only safe if the borders are 'secure'. All those countries in yellow are not hotbeds of crime and terrorism! The external Schengen border works, and has worked for decades, because there is good intelligence sharing about criminals.

Not just 'far' right. The Conservatives have consistently, since 2016, heightened the fear of immigrants to try and retain power and to falsely claim that it was the 'Will of the people' to lose our Freedom of Movement with 27 EU countries.
