Fortunately (I say this from a detached future perspective) he does not need instruction in how to buck expectations or question authority.
Got a second grader and he's got a lot of questions about why he has to do all the stuff he has to do. I'm doing my best to explain honestly why schools try to produce the citizens people in power would prefer. The hell of it is that you do need to know how and when to conform!
Born in 84, so would have been in first grade in 90. They had us practice duck and cover, but they framed it as an earthquake safety thing (despite being close to DC (no seismic activity)). I distinctly remember realizing the futility. Fatalism would remain a permanent fixture in my outlook.

When you're reading a shadow on the pitching deck of a ship, the margin of error can easily be 2-3 degrees. that's most of the dang map!

The other thing that's worth pointing out here is how narrow the range of values are. There are about 9 degrees of longitude and about 8 degrees of latitude you're really going to be worried about. This is comparable to the size of, say the Mediterranean or South China seas.
