It is absolutely ridiculous that Adrienne Villa's death has basically gone unreported in local & national media

An anti-ICE protester being held on $1.3 million bail found dead in a courtroom jail cell & crickets from media. Should make you question why they want this kept quiet!

A recent report led to the striking discovery of a woman who died in LASD custody in June amid a legal assault against anti-ICE protestors. Her story raises troubling questions.

As if it were nothing more than a minor aside, the article’s author then immediately shifts away to other information. A woman was found dead in her holding cell directly near the courtroom she had been in earlier that day, where she pleaded not guilty to assault and battery of a police officer, and all she had was a fairly vague paragraph.

If she were an anti-ICE protestor, as the article seemingly implied, then this would be a major escalation, as she would be the first anti-ICE protestor to die in Los Angeles. This would have been the direct fault of the state, in particular ICE and the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department (LASD), which was in charge of her detention at the time. Even if she weren’t, the seeming lack of details and the fact that it took multiple months for this tragic story to be reported on at all seemed perplexing and worth investigation.

One woman among those charged died in custody while detained at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center, shortly after she attended a hearing on June 17 during which she pleaded not guilty to 14 charges, 10 of which carried enhancements under California’s Three Strikes Law for prior felony convictions. During that hearing, she was remanded to custody and had bail set at $1.33 million. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Lieutenant Daniel Vizcarra told LA Public Press that she was found hanging in a cell lockup, later that day. The coroner pronounced her dead just before 4 a.m. the next morning, on June 18, 2025.

At least 33 people have already died in LA County jails so far this year, more than the total for all of last year. In-custody deaths should be rare if LASD properly cared for its inmates. The Courts should order many people released until LASD gets it act together (unlikely) or is disbanded.
