This is not caused primarily by "screen time".

It's been caused by the mass eradication of third places for young people in basically every city over the past three decades - and a society that's hostile to the concept of teens socialising in public spaces.

Hostility was at a peak under new Labour in its "anti-social behaviour" phase. Teens were regularly moved on by the police. I recall my grandson and three friends being moved on from a park bench, apparently 4 teens in the park sitting on a bench was too threatening.
