Maybe read the whole piece when you read Mr. Nichols’ work (I always called my professors ‘Mr’), not just through the paragraph that pisses you off.

I like it, too. Sums up how I feel - I’ve read too much history to be fooled about the ‘good old days’? And no, growing up on a dirt road pushing a shitty mower all summer, with 3 TV channels that I had to go outside and turn the antenna to catch, was not ‘better times’. It sucked.

You make good points. One of the leaders of our company (ESOP) often goes into a "things are better than they have ever been before" talk, and his arguments are always right on. When someone does start to make a counter point, he says "imminent thermonuclear war...". It always inspires a pause...
