  1. The closest library to my apartment became a museum after the town cut its funding for no other reason than greed. (Had to pay the town managers a raise and the library funding was in the way) While I appreciate a museum Iโ€™d rather be able to walk to a libraryโ€ฆ

  2. I recently got back into reading after a years long slump, and use the heck out of Libby! On track to meet my 100 book goal for the year. I love that I can request titles I can't find from other libraries and they'll ship them to mine to pick up. And all this is FREE? Libraries are awesome!

  4. I wanted to use libraries as a kid, but everytime I went there it backfired,no matter which libraries I went to. Either the books I wanted were being borrowed to people who paid money, not there,or one time a woman running one of the libraries mistook me for a previous bad customer and kicked me out

  5. The last bastion for film rentals. Itโ€™s also a good place to kill time because they have free wifi and internet. I donโ€™t get the hate for libraries when itโ€™s free for everyone to use.

  6. My local library is great, but on the highway. I don't drive, so I have to sprint down a stretch of busy road with no space to the side to reach it. This means I haven't been in there in years.

  7. We lost our bookstore forever. They become irrelevant, when kids โ€œ justifiablyโ€ burn them down in โ€œprotest,โ€ like in Minneapolis a few years back. I wonder if those kids told their grandma they torched Our store How did I know they were black kids. In, righteous indignation , thatโ€™s their claim!

  8. We got a new library 3 years ago and people complained about it. They said "Nobody will use it" but it's always full of people when I go with my kids every other Wednesday. We love it and so do many others in our town.

  9. Thinking leads man to knowledge. He may see and hear, and read and learn, whatever he pleases, and as much as he pleases; he will never know anything of it, except that which he has thought over, that which by thinking he has made the property of his mind. โ€“ Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi.(1746 โ€“ 1827)

  10. Love my public library. Although tend to use Libby more

With 100 branches, the Toronto Public Library is the largest public library system in Canada, and the world's busiest urban library system. Every year, more than 18.5 million people visit and borrow over 32 million items.

  11. A staple for society! I get audio books all the time but they provided needed resources beyond books/ internet for those in need, symphony & fed parks passesโ€ฆ etc. Books is just one of many community resources provided to enhance lives and improve our collective communities. Live then๐Ÿ’—

  12. You can pretty much tell how vibrant a city is by how excited the citizens are about their library. Our beautiful main branch, and even the satellite branches, of our library in Eugene,OR, are always busy. The community is there. Itโ€™s great.

  16. I use my library, but I now use my library card number to download free audiobooks more often than I go to the library building. That was especially helpful during Covid. See if your library subscribes to Hoopla or Libby if you want to try the service.

  17. I use several public libraries via Libby. Hey veterans and dependents, did you know there is a DoD digital library? All you need is your benefits ID number to sign up with Libby!!

  18. Why CLEAR Blue Sky? Moses was about to die while his people were on the verge of their biggest military challenge. Moses: "Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave or forsake you." Deut. 31:6. FEAR is all MAGA has.

  19. I've always loved the library and still use it frequently to check out Kindle books. I used to love going to the physical library but since I've switched to an e-reader, I really don't have any reason to go anymore.

  21. We take our kids about once a month. Donate in other ways to support the libraries as well.

I've also worked in a library, and my spouse has an MLIS and used to be a librarian.

    That's a really long way to say we're a pro-library household.

  22. I use my library and I support it financially. We cannot let libraries die. Or bookstores.

  23. Our public library has a yearly reading program with prizes to encourage reading. I often check it first for books im interested in and often end up buying myself a copy later.

  24. I honestly don't go to the library that much now that my kids are grown, and that's mostly because I have a small library in my house and I haven't even read all those books yet!

  28. The over paid union hacks at some Lower Mainland libraries have really lowered the quality of the library experience. Some are openly gang members one is pro Hitler ppl are allowed to sleep and prostitutes hang. All have signs warning that thieves operate there. Contact library board they no reply.

  29. Iโ€™m on our local library board. Last month we had ~1,100 users with a circulation of ~15K items. Hardcopy books are still #1. We double as a de facto community center offering exercise, art, and other classes.

  30. i love the library itโ€™s so calm and peaceful. I wish there were more dunkinโ€™ donuts in libraries though.

  31. in a given year we: get free garden seeds at a seed swap, cheap used books, checkout awesome board games for family night, more than 100 audiobooks for free on Libby/Hoopla, and use library resources to research purchases, classes, etc. all free or cheap. Libraries are the societal equalizer.

  32. Hi! ๐Ÿ–ค Libraries so much I became a librarian! Even if you don't read books, check out your local branch. You'd be surprised what we have on offer! Not to mention we're a warm hub, and a safe space.

  33. My kids even got reading stars for summer reading from the local library this summer that came with tickets to the local baseball game, voucher for a pastry from a local bakery, and a reading medal. They both started school back ahead of their grade reading level thanks to the program.

  34. I love my library. I just put things on hold and at some point theyโ€™re available. Itโ€™s like magic ๐Ÿ˜‰. It also means I try all sorts of new authors and topics I wouldnโ€™t otherwise read. Libraries are awesome.

  35. My local library offers dvds including new releases, magazines, newspapers, music, some streamed content, offers lectures, children's programs, bird watching kits, video games, puzzles, home delivery, travelling librarian, no more fines, and loans between cities or regions.

  36. People use libraries even without knowing it. For example Google Scholar relies on database resources made possible thanks to academic libraries.

  37. Libraries are society's great equalizer. Need a computer? They've got you covered. Looking for knowledge? Their shelves hold answers. Want a peaceful place to learn and grow? Their doors are open to all, no questions asked โ€“ just the quiet promise of opportunity.

  38. Those who erroneously believe libraries are no longer relevant also erroneously believe everyone has the funds to buy a computer, pay for a monthly connection, and have funds for upgrades, specific programs and hardware. They also believed the knowledge and ease to use this set up comes naturally.

  39. Headed to my local library in a few hours. I love stocking my classroom with books for my students. I can get books that reflect my students lived experiences as well as showing them how others live and see the world. Love the library!

  40. To this day a thing high on my list to do when I move somewhere new is get a library card. Libraries are amazingly relevant.

Also just putting this out there: the internet is full of lies. A published book is probably less so.

My library is a life-saver. Am an older lady and go at least twice a week. Thereโ€™s always some new book coming in and I put โ€œholdsโ€ on all the goodies. If youโ€™re not going to the library, give it a try! Itโ€™s lifesaving!!

  42. Love the library system in my city. Downtown location has a 3D printer that you can use for free. Other branches have free seed exchanges for garden vegetables. They also host a lot of free classes for all ages, such as intro to bee keeping, story time, Lego club, etc.

Why does the NJ State Library only allow users to take out one book at a time.. itโ€™s regressive and a pain in the a#s if youโ€™re researching something..

  44. It's sad to see an institution I have loved my entire life be tossed aside by so many. In our county, they failed to fund public libraries. Luckily, they still survive but are on life support. People failed to realize that libraries are so much more than a building with books.

  46. I just recently checked out 5 books from my local Dimond Library in Oakland, CA to get me through the Christmas holidays. I check out books throughout the year and frequently am on waiting lists for newer more popular releases. Libraries matter!!!

  48. We need third spaces in the community - places that are neither a private home nor a place of business. Libraries provide a third space for the community. Today I attended a meeting at a library. In another room a family was hosting a very large birthday party. We need these spaces.

  56. I use it ALL. THE. TIME. I check out books to escape to new worlds. I borrow movies to watch with family. I listen to music before purchasing. I research genealogy to learn my history. I learn new software to be more employable. I meet with friends to keep ties with community. (And more!)

  57. I love my library! I use my public library as a fun place to take my 7 month old great niece. I try to create that atmosphere in my school library; it is more than a place to check out books. It is a place to make, explore, make friends! A place to learn new skills!

  58. They are nice places but far from as relevant as they were 40 years ago. Also, it seems like many librarians are corrupt, using the libraries resources to further their own politics.
