I met people from all over the world who were working to serve their countries and fellow citizens and make the world a better place. I really wonder how those people are doing now, and what they think about how we're doing.

My first job out of college in 1996-1997 was arranging USAID-funded study tours/job shadowing/internships/mentoring/long-term academic study for government officials and community leaders from "emerging democracies" to come to the United States, meet their counterparts, and observe how things work.

Every time I feel discouraged about the value of my work in the midst of all of this, I remember that if education did not matter, they would not be attacking it so hard. If humanities and the sciences did not matter, they would not be attacking it so hard.
