It is now the 8th anniversary of Mania so time to dig up some Sonic trivia... This year, it's Kanga Clanga! (aka the Kangus). This lovable robo-roo originally lived in the outback but now entertains us all in Pinball Carnival Zone!

Kanga Clanga Badnik from Sonic Superstars. He is cute and orange, with a lovable blank eyed expression.Kanga Clanga Badnik, as it appears in a 2.5D prototype Evening Star worked on after Sonic Mania. It is balancing on its tail and kicking forward with its springy roo feet! Sonic is knocked to the left with significant kinetic force.A wider shot of Kanga Clanga hopping in pursuit of Sonic in the outback.

  1. Would love to see more behind-the-scenes stuff like this, Christian (if you're able to)! Dangit, now I really want a playable build of the prototype but that's probably not in the cards.... Anywho, happy anniversary to Sonic Mania!

  2. Even though this prototype by no means deters my high praise towards 𝘚𝘰𝘯π˜ͺ𝘀 𝘚𝘢𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘡𝘒𝘳𝘴, which is what this prototype eventually became. . . . It does look really nice, NGL.

If Arzest isn't available, I hope you guys come back to do another game with SEGA!

  3. Ooooooo I love that almost Saturn-like Aesthetic on the prototype. Would have loved to see a full game like that. the Badnik design is so cute!

  4. Looks like Sonic Superstars (Sonic Mania 2) was supposed to more similar to Sonic Mania before it was handed over to Arzest. And potentially different zones too.

  5. They said that they were never planning on making a sonic mania two Then what the hell is this then?! Clearly, Christian Whitehead was planning on doing one and it was scrapped. This clearly feels like a crime against humanity. (Or Sonic Fandom)

  6. Alt text says "as it appears in a 2.5D prototype Evening Star worked on after Sonic Mania"... is this a Mania 2 proto made before Superstars became a thing??

Also, I hope you guys get another chance to work with SEGA, because I would love to see a Sonic game in this art style.

  7. Man this hurts my heart. What I wouldn't give to see you guys make a true followup to Mania... What I wouldn't give...

  8. Sonic Mania was such a gift, one of my favorite games of all time. Thank you, to you and the team who brought it to life. You all are amazing!

  9. I love the design detail in the prototype of the pinball star on the feet to tie into how its kicks launch you instead of hurting you. The environment art in the prototype is so lovely too really feels like the art-style of the classic box art being brought into the games

  10. That is beautiful. Did Evening Star's work on this prototype go on to influence the development of Penny's Big Breakaway? I can't help but notice a lot of similarities between that game & this proto's art styles.

  11. Now THIS is what Sonic Superstars Should've looked like instead of what we got! 😒😞

Plus, the HUD looks just like it should in the classic sonic genesis games including Sonic Mania πŸ‘ compared what that other HUD looked in Superstars!πŸ‘Ž

  12. So cool! Watching the reveal of (and eventually playing) Sonic Mania was a thrill back then, and now hearing about the plans for a potential Sonic Mania 2 after years is neat, I'm glad you guys got to work on an original project, but would also love to see a new Sonic game by ES in the future

  13. Wow all I can say is wow. The next 2D needs to have your team and the superstars team in a Collab. Hear us SEGA WE NEED THIS

  14. Wait, all this time I thought Evening Star & SEGA were mutually waiting on one another to reach out first. But y'all had something, & SEGA didn't go for it? Trying not to make this a takedown, but I genuinely thought that was the only explanation for Superstars. That sucks; this looks great!

  15. This looks gorgeous, not gonna lie! :3

But i should say that this could've been Evening Star's Sonic Superstars to begin with... or Sonic Mania 2... you know what i mean! XD

  16. Sega, why on Earth would you pass on the coolest looking Sonic game possible?

  17. It looks beautiful, stylish, and true to Sonic! Hopefully this Sonic Mania 2 concept comes back in some way. Thank you for sharing this. Most of all, thank you Christian Whitehead and your team for giving us Sonic Mania! πŸ™πŸΌ

  18. Bro, I'd love to see you lead a 2D Sonic project for Sega. Even if it's in the 3D style. I really liked your level design with Sonic Mania. I'd love to see you push Sonic's potential to the limit.

  19. It's beautiful but it's tragic that Superstars is what we got instead of "Mania 2".

  20. Know i wonder what the true mania 2 would have even been like. I wonder if yall would have done anything new with the Hard Boiled Heavies. Introduce new members perhaps? I could totally see you guys swapping them out for different ones each installment

  21. Gorgeous art style. I love how faithfully the style was translated into 3D. Looks like a proper successor to Sonic Mania, and I really wish we could have seen this project take shape fully.

  22. Man, I would've defenitly loved seen you doing Mania quote on quote two, I think the whole Evening Star is really creative, demonstrated in all your proyects, the only "bad" thing from Mania, was recycling levels, but a whole Sonic game developed by you from scratch, would have been crazy.

    Wuv U :3
