There's a corralley to this, which is that many people are totally unaware how much effort by how many people it takes to sustain vaguely decayed liberal institutions.
An enormous number of people, pre-2016/2024, seemed to assume that vaguely decayed liberal institutions was as bad as things could possibly get, and proceeded to act on that assumption.
