IMO the simplest answer is the correct one...we got denser and more apathetic. This allowed the racists, the greedy and the religious fanatics (aka MAGA) to take control. Since 1/3 of U.S couldn't find enough reason to get our asses to a voting booth, the extremist minority who vote reliably, won.

This is now a typical cabinet meeting where each dept. head, of the most powerful nation on earth, take turns groveling to their supreme leader. This would be an invite for an adversary to attack if we didn't have a strong military to compensate for the shitshow that is our executive branch.
