In Italy all holders of public office, Members of Parliament, Mayors etc. are legally obliged to publish their tax returns and list of assets (shares, properties etc.) every year. The principle is that if you hold public office this information is of public interest.

Oh yes it very much is our business.
I think a lot of this goes for funding bodies too. I am being sent requests for peer reviewing funding bids constantly... feels like everyone is trying to get research funds now (understandably) and the system is run on collegial spirit that's running on fumes.
