Grimsley's "Surviving Military Revolution" (2001) found the average range for the ACW to be 116 yards. Nosworthy's Bloody Crucible of Courage and Hess's The Rifle Musket in Civil War Combat revise that downward to 80-100 yards and 96-114 yards respectively.
How much do you want to bet that every ACW officer was drilled in Washungton's axiom about not firing to soon?

Given how little training most of them got, probably only the ones that were history teachers or pre-war professional soldiers.
