if Watchmen is consistently one of the best-selling comics year-in, year-out, including the 2019 edition being #3 in 2023 (a random point, easily googled), is it actually a bad recommendation for new comics readers like general wisdom suggests these days?
My counter question that doesn't have clear data: how many of the people buying Watchmen then go on to buy more comics? Like, I know so many folks who picked it up in college as required reading, but who then didn't really continue to engage with the medium. Not the book's fault at all, but I wonder

There’s a difference between picking something up as required reading and picking something up out of genuine curiosity. I think most people who try to get into comics are predisposed to buy a second book, almost no matter what they start with, unless it turns out to be a huge turn off.

This is a really interesting point. Are there GNs that spark a lifelong love of comics (aka spending $50+ a month on comics)? Is Watchmen one of them?
