  1. Look, Newsom is an opportunist — basically pretty empty when it comes to any actual values. He would be a horrible presidential candidate and worse president. But he does deserve credit (or his comms team does) for giving voice to what Dems see as the way to fight Trump — mainly to mock him.

  2. If the candidate stands for that value, then throwing trans folks under the bus undermines that. I think the vast majority of Dem voters share that value, and the transphobia of Newsom and others suggests that there are no actual values that they stand for except not making “centrists” mad.

  3. The question is does the party or the candidate stand for the proposition that a trans person (or any person) is entitled to live how they want to live, to be who they actually are. That’s the value. Start there. And from that you get rights for everybody, including trans folks.

  4. There have been times and places in the human past where group identity, defined by language and descent, has mattered a ton for how political units define themselves. There are a lot more times and places where language and descent haven't mattered much. It doesn't have to be this way.

  5. These people seem to miss the point about politics: it’s about values. If a party stands for a value like equal treatment under the law, then that party should be willing to fight for that for everybody. It’s not that hard to understand nor to build messaging on. Start with the values you stand for.

  6. It will never not be weird to me that Knoxville, TN hosted a World’s Fair in 1982. Not to knock the city, exactly. It’s…fine. But you think of World’s Fairs, you think NYC, Chicago, London, Paris. More recently Barcelona. Not a small town mid-sized southern city.
