I think the shared universe stuff helped as well. It’s basically a cacophony of all pulp genre bundled together, sci fi and fantasy and detective and western and jungle adventures and explorers and so on and so forth.
I don't think you can find equivalently longrunning storytelling anywhere else. The movies have decades of story ideas to play with, which took from every other genre because they had to
