Interestingly I think a chunk of Dahl’s kids books are possibly not long for this world - certainly lots of the signature stuff like Charlie were creaking when I was young so I’m surprised they’ve lasted this long - but the recent Netflix adaptations of his semi adult stuff definitely have legs
That is almost bang what I had in mind. Also, and whisper it, but Dahl is close to that category. His books are weirdly paced.

Eh it’s a bit more sacred and profane in Midsummer, isn’t it? Or perhaps “court and country”. I get your point, though.

Eh I’m just saying “were considered low culture” and like did they even have the high/low distinction then? (No, not really, not in the formalised way) and even if they did who would be setting it? (The rich and aristocratic mainly, academia not existing in the same way)

Especially the digression about his band. Wonderful

Huge fan of how they detail every aspect of his career as though he’s y’know Orwell or Dickens rather than someone nobody has ever heard of

Again, that was probably a bit dated even in 1990, but probably kept in because firstly it allowed the gag about the haiku when its upgraded and secondly a Londoner and a West Country hippy probably weren’t the best judge of motors?

Yeah it was already creaking but we were aware of both of the references
