Yeah I've been talking to friends and family about paramilitaries for months now. Most Americans have no idea what it means.
If you're unfamiliar, a paramilitary is a kind of extra-legal armed force that's created to bypass traditional checks and balances. These may have no oversight whatsoever.
This means that these forces are frequently asked to do things that are illegal or extralegal in nature. In other words, paramilitaries are goon squads designed to skirt legal systems and carry out the dirty work of dictators and would be autocrats.
