As well as that cost, succeeding in state court is a slim proposition because those courts are currently ruled by a very anti-regulatory, literalist bunch. And a cooling standard bill went nowhere this legislative session, and probably won't move until the majority is flipped. 3/

In NC, local gov'ts can only do what Simon (the state gov't) says. There is debate whether state law allows local governments to require landlords to provide tenants AC. But testing this would invite litigation that would cost local taxpayers, so no town is risking it. 2/

We need stronger federal and #NCGA policies to prevent this consequence of man-made climate change from continuing to get worse, an updated FEMA flood map, and state policies that better equip municipalities like Wendell to mitigate flooding.
