When he’s not, they can fantasize he’s something other than what he is and vote for the fantasy

I think the check was in the mail even before COVID, though the pandemic certainly helped

This is fair to a great extent. Though I do wonder if it would have happened under another President
The optics of voting against those things were pretty bad at the time (not an excuse, just a fact), and if the President didn't want/support them, where would we be?
I can see that Republicans run the media narrative, but Trump’s polling - personally and on almost every issue - is in the toilet
He’s only embraced - to a meager extent - when he’s out of office and the public can convince themselves of their fantasy version of him
