serious contingent discontinuities in a country’s foreign policy weaken its influence.
we saw this quite recently where Russia and Israel could rationally say “let’s see if you still feel that way next January” to our diplomats

I think an underrated benefit of monarchy specifically is that counterparties have a pretty good idea who’s going to be in charge in ten, twenty, and thirty years.
obviously this isn’t the only or most important thing but even in the Good Case America is going to feel its lack for years to come
literally any system in which you know who is in charge upon a transition of government is better than any government where that issue must be settled by violence. "not having a civil war every 30 years" is just an incredibly powerful technology.
Opposing sports bans while paying lip service to the vast plurality of people who have been misled and radicalized about the issue is, in fact, the best possible position for a presidential candidate
He is a gay man who is the strongest contender for the democratic nomination, he is against trans sports bans, and these people are calling him worse than Hitler for taking an incredibly well-calibrated stance on a complicated and unpopular issue that has been made into a wedge by the right

Gets to the heart of something I wonder about often; from a functional perspective, why did absolute monarchy, a system which makes itself hostage to the lottery of birth, endure for so long?
Quelle suprise
What is his beef with it?
it's easy: the centrist candidates working together was cheating, but the left candidates not doing so is wrecking
really the funny ignored post-script to the 2020 primary is that Warren and Sanders spent the next four years fighting centrists on behalf of Biden's agenda
hamas did not fortify gaza. hamas did not sequester aid. hamas made no attempt to lessen the blow it brought down on the civilians for whom it was notionally the government. instead they declared Palestine a "nation of martyrs" and hid with their captives while the people under their care died.
Hamas's survival has little to do with the courage and resourcefulness of its members (most of those who joined pre-10/7 being dead for months) and the nature of counter-insurgency
I almost admire the blunt honesty of Hegseth saying that he honors the Confederacy.
He's right. His entire administration venerates the Confederacy and everything it stands for.
I look forward to another Reconstruction when we can honor Reconstruction 1.0 by melting Confederate statues into slag.

Secretary Hegseth has announced his intention to reinstall the monument in 2027.
