Found this today in the yard. A Hickory Horned Devil. In spite of looking like a Sci-Fi alien, it is harmless to us humans, but still freaked out my 45 y.o. son.

I just had a conversation with my granddaughter about this. I refused to kill a spider because "They are beautiful critters, and they eat things we don't like. We don't kill spiders in this household."

My daughter-in-law came to pull me from shoveling concrete (I was. more than a bit happy to be interrupted). It was 'huge' and 'scary' and would surely eat the grandkids.
It was a wee zipper spider. I bravely told DiL to leave her alone. This home is a no spider abuse zone.
