The teacher was correcting the student. The student doesn't get to correct the teacher.

That would imply the student’s usage was incorrect which isn’t objectively true.

There are better ways for a teacher to handle such a situation - from the starting point of belittling the student to the student answering back, particularly as the student raises an important, valid point. Sending them to the Principal would also be overkill.
