I am heartbroken and furious over the shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis. Kids should be learning, laughing, making friends — not running for their lives on the very first week of school.

How many more children will live this nightmare before our elected leaders do something?

Replies

  1. Notice how the media focuses less and less on mass shootings. But throw a sandwich at a National Guardsman and it will play forever on the news.

  2. The same question we ask, after every massacre. I suspect GOOPS will do nothing & Centrists will say they can’t, because they have no power….or use it in a campaign as to vilify GOOPs some more 😵‍💫

  3. How many children, teenagers, and adults must keep having to relive their deepest traumas everytime the see another one of these happen, because they once survived a school or mass shooting in the past?

    1
  4. We try and We try Over and over it happens again Once again,we try Then there’s the pile of money in between us trying and politicians pocketing the money It all boils down to money and an ignorant group of Americans that consider their right to carry more important than our children to live.

  5. It will never stop until the NRA and Republican party are powerless to stoke hatred and culture wars. Where are all the 2A heroes now that dictatorship and repression have reared their ugly head? They kept saying this is why we need so many guns. It's always projection....

  6. I live in Oregon. They very first school shooting was Kip Kinkle. That was 1998. So going on 30 years. After that, Co. And on And on and on. ..... So probably 250 years ?

  7. As legislators concentrate on retribution, gerrymandering, and going home instead of voting to release the Epstein files, children returning to school are dying and being wounded in school shootings. Enact the strong gun laws we need to keep school children alive. These victims WERE already praying.

  8. You can either have schools where kids get educated in safety or you can have corrupt politicians running the country. One of those takes a lot more than "thoughts and prayers" to accomplish

    0
  9. Given they were all “praying” when this horrific event occurred tells you all you need to know about how effective prayer is. Guns: 3, Prayers: 0

  10. it takes 2/3rds majorities in the house/senate, and 3/4ths of states with majorities (constitutional amendment). probably 50-100 years from now is the nearest possibility. I always consider that all present living humans will be completely gone/replaced in 100 years, so that makes anything possible.

  11. We will mourn for the next few weeks. Society will move on and we will all wait for the next senseless shooting. These tragedies will continue until there is some form of gun control and mental health help for those who need it.

    0
  12. Another day, another shooting. Children dead and injured. Why is there never enough white hot burning rage about this? I don't want to hear Democrats telling us that their "hearts go out.." etc, etc, etc. I want to hear them screaming "ENOUGH OF THIS FUCKING SHIT!!!!" at the top of their lungs.

FUCK YOU AND YOUR FUCKING GUNS

  13. The GOP will invariably blame mental health & not guns for yet another school shooting! Please remind them that 205 of 'em voted AGAINST a bill to expand school-based mental health services! :(

    1
  14. You first need to elect the right leaders. Electing Trump for the second time was as inutterably stupid as was the UK voting for Brexit.

  15. Depends on the elected officials. Thousands more kids could be slaughtered and Republicans would do fuck all about it. They are fine with the president being a child rapist so of course they don’t care how many get shot to pieces.

    0
  16. They never will.

Capitalism is king in America, and gun control impacts the profits of gun manufacturers, not to mention offends the preprogrammed sensibilities of the right wing rank and file who those manufacturers have propagandized for decades.

Money talks. Working class children die.

  17. Elected REPUBLICAN “leaders”. Dems aren’t perfect but GOP are the main roadblock to this and their efforts to gerrymander to win enough seats to prevent changes. We cannot move in a positive direction bc of them. It’s why they are cheating to win. Gaslighting all the way.

    0
  18. Just to clarify.... They were in church pews, then crouching with heads down and their teachers trying to physically block any harm.

    1
  19. Mane it’s time for a Natl walk out to drive home the public’s outcry for better gun control? That would really show the world that American citizens are part of the political funding by the NRA?

    0
  20. Lots. Our country has no fucks to give about little kids being slaughtered and dying alone. We were given a chance w/ Sandy Hook, but, as it turns out, USA just does not care. Hopes & prayers, but zero fucks. Oh, we also don't give a fuck about the president of the United States raping kids so....

    1
  21. Sadly, they don't care. Only if we could pass commonsense gun reform. Reenact the Assault Weapons Ban, Close Loopholes, Ban Ghost Gun Kits, Expand Background Checks, and Well-Regulate Gun Owners like the Military is Well-Regulated. Commonsense gun reform. I call my reps and keep fighting for reform!

    1
  22. Sadly, in this country, nothing is ever going to be done. It has the greatest, stark impact on me when I walk around cities like Madrid where schoolyards are open and kids are playing without any worry of getting shot.

    0
  23. Republicans will give you their fucking worthless thoughts and prayers and that's it.

    0
  24. I am imagining sending my child to school & my child being murdered by a shooter. There are no words to express how absolutely devastating it would be. Your world ends & you begin living a nightmare.

We need to stop electing politicians who are not serious about gun control.

    1
  25. Over the next 3-years at least, students have to. E aware of their surroundings unfortunately

    0
  26. And how long before one of those kids realizes "huh. Guns hurt innocent people, now what if we use them on the BAD folks."

Like fucking christ if I survived a school shooting and they wrote me off as expendable, I'd lose my shit. The fuck is it doing to these kids?

    0
  27. Yup, and since a lot of elected leaders don't want to do anything, it's up to everyone in the US who can vote to vote. Vote those people out of office. And keep doing this.

Thank you Gabby for everything you have done and keep doing. You are a light in the dark.

    0
  28. All the prayers in the world will not stop this. Praying to an invisible being is no answer. Let’s face facts Christians are the real problem in America and most of the gun owners are Christian.

    0
  29. So we're gonna have to drive through military checkpoints just so magas can play with their guns aren't we?

    0
  30. Republicans are at fault. They rape and kill kids. Guns are more precious than their babies. They elect sexual predators to office. Time for change. Make it more difficult for mentally ill to acquire weapons. Party choice should b on application & any R needs deeper scrutiny.

    0
  31. They must not get enough thoughts & prayers in parochial schools because you know that’s all this administration is going to give them… 😔

    0
  32. We have an entire generation of new adults that grew up with that violence and school shooting drills now voting.

No one should be forced to face this horror. You're absolutely right and we need gun reform legislation now.

    0
  33. @gabbygiffords.bsky.social I’m sitting here in Sydney 🇦🇺 sick to the stomach at yet another slaughter of innocents in the USA. I read about it first on the BBC global site and then the Sydney Morning Herald. At this moment, there is NOTHING in the NYT. America, hang your collective heads in shame.

    0
  34. You know better than most that if we keep asking the question that way--vanilla, non-accusatory, non-partisan--the answer is Never.

Let's at least lay the blame on those it befits, not on some group of generic "elected leaders."

    0
  35. GOP maga goons don't care about lives. They stuff their pockets with NRA money. That's all they want. SAD!

    0
  36. The weird thing is that so many in the US behave as if this was unavoidable. This is not an issue in the UK, or Italy, or France. Our kids don't have to have active shooter drills at school. We don't have to worry that our kids might be shot at school or elsewhere.

    0
  37. Fear and chaos is the plan. Anything and everything that takes away focus from what the current administration is doing is helpful to them.

    0
  38. It was never about 2A nor safety in communities. If it were, red states with high crime rate, wouldn't send our military to DC to conduct a police call nor to roll a red carpet out for a despot. Ghislaine would stay in a cell, seditious conspirators no pardon +no pardons with ambassadorships.

    0
  39. A bold move to resolve the gun violence crisis is to overturn the SCOTUS 2008 Heller decision.

    0
  40. Ms. Gabby, unfortunately most of our elected officials and leaders are more concerned with Cracker Barrel's new logo, Taylor Swift's engagement, putting a traitors face on Mt Rushmore, demonizing black and brown individuals, hiding the Epstein files and above all cult worship. Sad but 🤷

    0
  41. Thank goodness POTUS and the Republican-led Congress are so focused on exacting revenge on political rivals, critiquing corporate logos and whitewashing the US instead of tackling real issues (mental health, gun reform) that matter to the millions of people who did not vote for the Trump Show. 😡

    0
  42. Gun Violence Trauma,do not look to Government Officials to protect your children over 2nd Amdt. Those families lives will forever be scarred.Heartbreaking&Earth shattering to lose a child under any circumstances let alone a man made crisis from Elected Legislators.Another Heartbreaking day in the USA

    0
  43. Can't wait to find out ALL the obvious, even NRA adjacent opportunities, to have prevented this pos from having firearms. We know the script we'll be reading in the next few hours. 😐

    0
  44. Money it seems, is more important to those with the power to make change, then the lives of children. We're gonna have to bring the change to the powerful motherfuckers.

    0
  45. I'm sorry for the kids that died but what happened inside that place to drive someone to do it. Almost Identical situation Happened in Tennessee they refused to release the files because religion of course.

    0
  46. Wanna bet that the Orange Moron will not have a compassionate message to share with the parents of the little children injured and killed. Why not? Because the school is located in a blue state and he hates Gov Walz. Trump is very sick!

    1
  47. No doubt the racists and rape culture apologists will use this tragedy to disarm victims, especially the most marginalized. That’s why I support Black Guns Matter.

    1
  48. GOP: "This isn't the time to talk about guns! Thoughts & Prayers!"

Then they go home to their wife & kids who are safe & sound, knowing that white Jesus approves their job well done.

    0
  49. There are a couple of seemingly simplistic measures that Congress could have easily passed with Bipartisan support in a prior administration, that would have been a deterrent in almost every mass school shooting since Columbine. Perhaps it's not too late.

    2
  50. They're never going to do anything as long as guns are a powerful and effective wedge issue and we don't get money out of politics.

    0
  51. Well, we know nothing is going to happen to change that during this administration.

    0
  52. This is one fucked-up disgusting place. The blood of your children is on the hands of the Republicans. Remember that!

    0
  53. “The shooter was identified as Robin Westman who used to go by Robert Westman…” here is the excuse for them. “The guns didn’t kill anyone, a trans person did! Hormones! Body dysmorphia! Covid vaccine!”

    2
  54. Our violence obsessed society encourages lax gun laws to be exploited so everyone can arm themselves to the teeth. Gotta stay locked& loaded for that government coming after ya! It’s here literally pulling people off the streets and disappearing them. It’s killing children in schools. Republicans?🖕🖕

    0
  55. Agree we need to do something about Trump-hating Democrat, transgender terrorists like the Minneapolis killer.

    0
  56. The fascists, holding the majority, won't say it out loud but the answer to your question of how many more? All of them. To line their pockets and keep their death grip on power they will sacrifice everything and everyone.

    It's all expendable to them.

    0
  57. Rest of world just looks aghast at US's inability to just get rid of the guns. Hell, in the UK you get arrested and likely jailed just for carrying a knife longer than Trump's erect penis (3 inches)

    0
  58. An earlier post called this "the first school shooting of the season." Stunning. Think about it. Are we so resigned to accepting these violent attacks that we now refer to them in expectation of more? We cannot permit the normalization to continue! Mere thoughts & prayers will not stop the killing.

    0
  59. Trump will take everyone's guns. That is 100% guaranteed. You cannot run a fascist government and be the king, when every peasant is carrying a weapon that can change the dynamic of a nation with a single finger, and from a mile away. Democrats better not be stuck in there get rid of guns mindset.

    1
  60. You really are ignorant to the tension in the USA aren't you? Fact is we are headed for Civil/Revolutionary War by the end of the year. These mass shootings will be what people would rather have seen then millions that are about to die in the coming years. The USA did this to themselves. Complicit.

    0
  61. The Republican Party will never be satisfied until more children are killed. They don’t care about children. They’re only obsessed with fetuses.

    2
  62. As long as the NRA is allowed to lobby & manipulate politicians on the basis of a small but 'rabid' group of MAGA types, who think the 2nd Amendment is all about their right to own military-grade weapons, and we have politicians who accept their bribery, this will continue...

    0
  63. They're waiting for #Jesus, aka #Trump to save them. We're now awaiting arrival of the National Guard. #Minneapolis

    0
  64. And when will we learn to not make these acts the news of the hour? The more coverage this type of thing gets, the more copy cats will follow. We sensationalize the horror. Sometimes, less is more.

    0
  65. Gabby is married to Senator Mark Kelly and was an elected official herself that was a staunch 2nd Amendment supporter before she herself got Shot in the Head, Gabby Giffords is no better person than Kyrsten Sinema. Mark Kelly always Votes to Kill Children in Gaza. #WarPigs #GenocidalZionists

    0
  66. I guess they didn't learn that prayers don't really work at stopping Mass Shootings, neither do Police in Schools or Churches #GunControl

ALT: a girl in a school uniform is saying ironic isn 't it
    0
  67. What administration wants is to flood the streets with military and throw people in prison camps unless they’re white, straight and cookie cutter perfect. There’s no room for kids in a war zone which is what we now live in. Watch & protect ur own cause this is start of what republicans created.

    0
  68. Also, why are so many Americans so accepting of these murders of school children that they just turn the page and ignore it? There was outcry for days about a corporate sign, but these same people seem not to care that someone murdered children in their church at school. We are lost as a nation

    0
  69. When Columbine didn't change anything, and then 26 tiny children slaughtered in Connecticut didn't change anything.....it became apparent nothing will ever change.

    0
  70. “They” are not eating the cats and dogs” “banned books don’t slaughter children” “it’s not the drag queens or the trans kids” #ItstheGUNS #CommonSenseGunReformNOW

    0
  71. Still going to refuse gun control, in the face of more child deaths & woundings. So savagely wild-west they must hoard their weapons of child destruction , bathed in the blood of their children. Do not tell me you need guns to protect your children: uncontrolled ownership of guns is killing them.

    1
  72. Agree. Mental health needs to be prioritized. Diana, Princess of Wales advocated for it when she was alive. Until people realize gun control is not taking peoples' guns away. The 2nd amendment isn't about guns, it's about defending ourselves from authoritarian rule. 💕 @gabbygiffords.bsky.social

    0
  73. Republicans are letting Trump institute martial law on the streets of America but can't even bring themselves to pass sensible gun control measures. Useless criminal hypocrites!

  75. I was very heartbroken about all the sexual assaults that happened/happens every day at churches and their schools.

    0
  76. What did they do after Sandy Hook, or Uvalde, or any of the other school shootings? We are a hateful nation with fascist leaders. We value guns over people and money over decency; frankly, we suck as a nation.

    1
  77. Only 32% of adults own a gun. Most Americans do not own a gun.

Most gun owners own more than one gun. Two to four guns are owned by 37% and 29% own more than five guns. 32% own one gun.

Pew Research Center, Survey of US Adults, 2023 and Demographics of Gun Ownership, 2017.

    It's the guns!

    0
  78. We’ve known since Sandy hook that Republicans value the second amendment over kids lives. Their motto: Protect the guns, fuck the kids.

    7
