Hey Jason, this is a misconception. There have been Black New Yorkers since it was called New Amsterdam (1600s). Slavery was more prevalent in NY than other northern states. 36,000 Black New Yorkers in the 1890 Census, 60,000 in 1900. Small % of total, but enough for the writers to be realistic.

Gonna get some of the 2004 James Baldwin stamps so I can reenact him spanking Buckley in the Cambridge debate.
No idea how long this was in the works, but the USPS is issuing stamps featuring a guy who wrote an opinion piece defending Jim Crow because “the White community is so entitled because for the time being, it is the advanced race.”
