  1. Hey Jason, this is a misconception. There have been Black New Yorkers since it was called New Amsterdam (1600s). Slavery was more prevalent in NY than other northern states. 36,000 Black New Yorkers in the 1890 Census, 60,000 in 1900. Small % of total, but enough for the writers to be realistic.
