Paul Krugman on Trump's attempted take over of the Fed:
This is right. Any effect on the economy is of secondary importance. Trump is weaponizing the government against people he doesn't like. The very definition of an authoritarian.
I think it's a mistake to think of the firing of Lisa Cook primarily in terms of Central Bank Independence, and its impact on the inflation rate.
The most significant issue is also more basic: it's the rule of law.
Trump’s politics of personal intimidation creates a coordination problem for the country’s elites that I do not see the media meaningfully grappling with.
If the economy continues to get worse I think that just makes Trumps grip on power stronger. I think there’s the notion that he will face economic pushback and that undermines him, but I think he’ll say “they” are tanking the economy so he needs to crack down harder.
Today’s Executive Order creating a nationwide military “quick reaction force” and setting up an online portal to permit random fascist vigilantes to join soldiers is one of the scariest things I’ve seen in U.S. politics in my adult life. Why is it not getting more attention?
Writing “says he is” should really make the headline writers stop cold and reflect on what theyre doing.
Theyre not “distractions”; it’s just a whole bunch of crazy stuff all happening at once, which is itself quite noteworthy.
SCOTUS thought they could ride the tiger and get what they wanted ideologically. In exchange, they would give him everything he wanted except the Fed. Just leave the Fed alone and you can ignore all federal law. But it ended the same way it has for everyone who tried to ride the tiger since 2016.
So ludicrously unconstitutional, and ”not at all how any of this works”, they’re essentially just trolling anyone who still believes in the law or rights or really anything.
Trump signs an executive order: "If you burn a flag, you get one year in jail."
He’s going to declare lese majesté as soon as someone explains it to him.
