Also, on a Vespa you're not as likely to join the bike lane and be able to zip out front at lights. Also, parking on the sidewalk is iffy.

I live in the Bay Area, and I can get across town faster on my scooter than a car, at lights I join the bike lane to get to front and then beat cars out when it goes green and have the lane to myself.
At destinations, there's never any hassle parking. I love my kickscooter, so useful in a city.

Do agree that helmets are a problem with the rental model. Personal ownership solves a lot of problems, both because you develop experience and head gear.

My primary vehicle for errands is a kick scooter, it has 10" x 3" wheels with shocks, the kick scooter has more surface area on the road than a 30" x 1" bike wheel, it's just wider, it bridges holes bikes go in.
The real issue is the tipping hazard, which is solved by crouching when at speed.
