Also, the Anniversary of Hiroshima.
One of the most significant pieces of legislation ever signed in to law. In order to represent the people - ALL the people must be allowed to voice their opinion at the ballot box. It is the only way progress is made. If one party wins all the time, some people will never get a fair shake
John Lewis was arrested 40 times. In 1961 for using a โwhite bathroomโ ..he served almost 40 days in Parchman Farm prison. Today they are still locking up people for being brown. In the Fulton County jail where I worked during law school the population of black or brown inmates remains at 87%. ๐
We are learning daily who among us would have dressed in white hooded robes to violently repress and intimidate those who merely wished to be equal... And those who would have marched with the repressed to help them gain equality.

Use/share this spreadsheet (bit.ly/Goodtrouble) as a resource to call/email/write members of Congress, the Cabinet and news organizations. Reach out to those in your own state, and those in a committee that fits your topic. Call. Write. Email. Protest. Unrelentingly. We deserve better โค๏ธโ๐ฉน๐ค๐
1/This is exactly what 47 and his disciples want when they say Make America Great Again. This is the history they want erased. It demonstrates the necessity of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion. There were/are laws and policies designed to keep Black ppl poor, uneducated, & turn them back into slaves.
Lyndon B. Johnson; Constance Baker Motley; Earl Warren; Thurgood Marshall
"President Johnson called for Congress to pass legislation defending Americansโ right to vote. It did." Which took an enormous amount of skill and political clout that few men would have attempted much less succeeded in undertaking. As usual, his courage and sacrifice are reduced to a single line.
Itโs always a helpful reminder, particularly in the current environment, that we can do the right thing pulling the levers of a democratically elected government. Thanks @hcrichardson.bsky.social. Back to work fighting for democracy for everyone, even as its laws and institutions are being shredded.
In keeping with Prof Heather's essay for Aug 5, this essay describes events in that time period.
Oregon lawyer & my former maritime law professor Carl Neil is gone now, but he wrote this, about trying to do good in Mississippi in 1966. I can only imagine...
We can destroy voting rights but we can't do anything about the Second Ammendment.
Who would believe we are redoing this subject again. Voting rights. Abortion. Rights to join Unions.
This was an amazing collaboration! I loved watching, listening, thinking.
Thank you for this! What a Regime
RUpubliclones FASCISM & the Project 2025 PSYCHOPATHS want the voting rights act destroyed. ๐คฌ
I'm just so sick of the LIES from ALL of them! Lies about everything! When will they literally try to convince us the grass is blue and the sky is green....
Did our parents cry as mush for us as we are for our children and grandchildren?Cuban crisis,Nam, Nixon,JFK,RFK,MLK,protest, drugs, civil rights movement, energy crisis.BUTthat was Fear then; now the devils hand is clutching our throats. We lived by the Constitution; now its in flames bc of PROJECT 2025
โHistory is a vast early warning systemโ
My ability to vote is secure. I'm not so confident others' votes will be secure much longer. It's heartbreaking that one political faction is intent on destroying the ability for all of us to vote. That vote must really be important that they're willing to go to every length possible to deny it.
Republican response to every American securing their rights.
Republicans have been the go to Party for racists and bigots since Goldwater's campaign invented the Republican Southern Strategy.
Reagan and The Heritage Foundation completed the switch by recruiting KKK, Dixiecrats and Wallace-minded.
Voting lines epic I suspect. If 99% vote in midterms. I will pay off national debt the moment asked of me to do so when given my retirement. Easy for me. Owned the debt since birth. Someone had to own that ๐ฉ. Ironic how itโs held in my Canadian SIN number in my family holdings account since my birth
I love it when democrats are do desperate they bring back complaints from 60 years ago. They know their 2025 platform is garbage.
Love ๐ you Heather ๐๐โ๏ธ๐บ๐ธ๐บ๐ฆ๐ต๐ธ๐๏ธ๐๐
Voting rights at huge risk. Be informed!
It is good to remind folks why the Voting Rights Act was necessary. Thank you!
