I swear that I always just assumed that the gold in his hotels was mostly just plastic and that the paint would be peeling in a few of the bathrooms.
Gold leaf isn't actually that expensive as a material - it's not cheap, but it's not that expensive. The main coat is in applying it and, like all things, there's an art to doing it well.
Gold paint is cheaper, but it's also much easier to do and much harder wearing.
