  2. The "downplaying" always seems to be a codeword for criticising sensationalist crime reporting and debunking scare stories of lawlessness and anarchy. The agenda of The Atlantic is entirely obvious: they want to shut up any kind of discourse critical of authoritarianism.

  3. Calling everything a distraction has been incredibly effective propaganda. Not that it's terribly convincing, but it gives everyone this veneer of cover for why nobody is doing anything. Everything is distracting from the REAL issue which we won't define or do anything about either.

    what Americans seem to want is to be able to buy whatever product they want without government interference but also an ironclad guarantee that all store-sold products are safe, and we just need to recognize that these are contradictory ideas and we're gonna have to make people mad about the former
