Did anyone take the first AC Transit bus in 20 years down Alcatraz Avenue in Oakland/Berkeley?

Can you please explain to me the value of an Alcatraz E-W bus when
- 55th has the children’s hospital & DT Berkeley
- Ashby Ave has Alma Bates hospital & BART + DT Berkeley & E’Ville
- College, Telegraph, & Shattuck all have frequent N-S bus routes to DT Oak, Samuel Merritt, Kaiser Hospital, etc.?
