The US will never gain back any respect in the world. It's like shitting yourself at work. No matter how high in the company you rise, you will always be that guy who shit himself at work.
Need some ice on your chest, pounding on it like it owes you money. If Germany and Japan can make comebacks over a few generations, it's ridiculous to say that the U.S. will never find redemption.
