There was a lot of bad going on in the 80s and 90s. Unlike now, crime was actually bad. The 30 year decline in violent crime that keeps being ignored started in the early 2000s. There was an AIDS pandemic that Republicans were (shockingly) on the wrong side of then too. Lots of fear and homophobia.

I mean, man. I grew up in NYC when the city was falling apart and swathes of the South Bronx were nothing but gutted buildings. Yeah, the late 70s - early 80s were pretty fucked up.

Also correlation is not causation! No broken windows was credited for crime reduction, but other cities that did not have that policing edict also saw similar reductions in crime. A better correlation matched the removal of lead from gasoline. "Lead poisoning can contribute to violent behaviors"

And Ryan White. I remember being very young and just...constantly sad about this poor boy my age. He was all over the news for months as the face of HIV (why is another conversation). www.youtube.com/watch?v=k21h... Before this period, the Jesse Helms of the world were calling it "God's judgement".

As much as I wish the nostalgia vibes people are basking in were accurate, the 80s and 90s also had Reagan era policies to contend with....therefore a massive spike in homelessness and and poverty and a bunch of movies about greedy wall street bankers doing drugs.
