for the record: I develop games for people who play games to have fun

Replies

  1. I think achievements can be fun for certain types of games, especially when they are deliberately designed, but not every game needs them, and no dev should be obligated to add them to any type of game. And a game having them is never a make-or-break situation for me.

  2. That person has "issues". I never look for achievements but sometimes I get upset when one would be SO OBVIOUS & they didn't put it in. Like Alone In The Dark 2024. You're on a boat. There's a huge bell on the boat. I hit it with a hammer & shot it. It made a sound. No "ring my bell" achievement.

  3. It's interesting because I was watching a devstream for a game called Faith in Despair, and when I said I wasn't much of an achievement hunter the dev figured I'd probably just play through the journal and that's it. Underestimating my ability to repeatedly do shit I enjoy for ages for no reward XD

  4. I have an idea for a good achievement:

make an achievement of doing in the game something that you think will be fun, but some players could potentially miss doing it because they didn't think it will be

i'm running the numbers and you'd Probably have a Big Uptick in players if you also praised them for playing your game

  6. I am like this and i hate it.. Most Games i have to 100% it or else im not satisfied. Most of the time it sucks the fun out of a Game.

  7. I have an odd relationship with these...I agree they are pointless and rarely go out of thexway for them...but at the same time one of the reasons I stick to Playstation as my platform of choice is because there I have a record of every game I've played on them along with what I've accomplished

  8. Achievements / Trophies have ruined gaming for a lot of people. While I have a huge collection of Trophies, I feel it's not for the fun of it and it's just a compulsion to complete everything in the game. Take them away tomorrow and I'd probably enjoy gaming more.

  9. The Mistplay adverts are Black Mirror level dystopian to me. Even if it weren't a scam imagine needing to be paid to have fun.

  10. If people only play games for achievements then that's quite sad.

"Did you enjoy that new game you bought for $70 ?"

"No, it sucked ass and killed my mother, but the easy achievements that did nothing for me made it worth it."

  11. You can definitely have fun with achievements though. I can think of a few achievements that are still really funny. Carbon faceprint from CoD, "the part where he kills you" from Portal 2 (which itself is part of a larger gag)...

  12. I will never understand this obsession with achievements. It started out as a nice and easy to implement bonus, but somehow has become a status thing for some people.

    1
  13. I don't really get all the hostility over this. If you don't like achievements thats fine, but why hate on others that do enjoy them?

I personally enjoy achievements in games not to show off, but because of the alternative gameplay and/or goals they can create.

  14. I have fun getting achievements. I really appreciate having achievements and screenshots/clips to look back on, as a log of my adventures. I don't usually go for 100%, just what I can get through playing normally and any side content I want to do.

    1
  15. I only like seeing achievements pop if they're interesting, if it's just "Reached level 5" or "Crafted 10,000 baskets" I could give a shit lol

  16. It's such a fun question to answer.

    "can you add achievements?"

    "Yes"

And then just never add them. Because the question was vague as hell and you just confirmed that you indeed could add them.

  18. Just placate them by adding a single achievement once the game is finished: “Achieved: story completed; had fun”

  19. As someone who likes achievements, I only care to get them all in games I actually like. If the game is fun, I will get them all and then continue to play it for long after like I did with Tekken 7, Dead or Alive 5 (last round) and 6 and Crash Team Racing. I'll also play games without.

  20. if you're so dead-set on showing other people that you liked a game but somehow the featured achievements showcase is your only idea, maybe put a featured review of the game on your profile instead so you can actually write about it?

i love achievements (a well-documented fact) but come on now

I mean achievements CAN be fun when they are used to nudge players into exploring a different playstyle.

I don't think I would have considered using no powers in Dishonored 2 if the game hadn't suggested it via an achievement and that led to me having fun with the game for longer.

    2
  22. the only time I go after achievements is if it's a game that has a fairly low amount and I like the game enough to want to go after some extra fun side tasks

  23. Sometimes achievements can help people think about alternate ways to engage with the mechanics of a game. A sort of "wait they want me to do what? Who'd that even work?".

Not most achievements though. Most achievements a introduce anti-fun game engagement and/or spoilers.

  24. I always liked achievements being random dumb things the devs thought of that was OUTSIDE the main game (basically, do something stupid 100 times or find an in-joke at a location not needed for the plot, etc). But when it became "...you played chapter 2... Achievement." it was like, "...ok."

    0
  25. i'm an achievement hunter but i still enjoy playing games if they don't have them, just because the game is fun lol

    that guy is odd

  26. When I Get This Call Every Day was on Steam, I added achievements, including one (for beating the game) that could never actually be earned.

10% of players of the game on Steam "earned" the unearnable achievement.

    I don't understand these people.

an achievement for the sake of achievement is stupid. i like them for showcase the game in a kind of narrative way, or an easter egg.

what i mean is there's an edge

  28. Damn, this is kinda wild. So I always wondered why people bristled at achievements as a concept and I’ve seen other devs mention that people are weird about it, but I didn’t realize it was like that!! Like, I like a good achievement just as a cool measure of progress, but yeah it’s never like this.

  29. “A lot of people only play games for the achievements”? What year is it? Are we back in 2008?

    0
  30. The commenter there has a shit argument for them, but what's wrong with achievements? I like my lil profile knick knacks

    0
  31. Okay gonna reframe his comment to Sound less weird in my head. Depending on the type of game archievment hunting can be a fun way for some people (me..talking about me) to extend playtime with a goal in mind to push towards after finishing the Main goal of a game (idk final boss/credits)

    0
  32. I hate achievements, probably to an unreasonable degree. I wish I could disable the achievement notifications on Steam without turning off the overlay entirely

    0
  33. Maybe it's because I'm an older gamer, but I've never understood why achievements are so important to some gamers

We used to play games to...you know....play games, not because we were earning some imaginary score for it that doesn't mean a goddamn thing

    0
  34. Achievements give me anxiety. I'm not good enough to get them all in most games, and seeing all those unticked boxes or grey text sends my happy hormones crashing.

    0
  35. easy, just pull a Stanley Parable and say "oh please, are you really doing this for the achievement"

    0
  36. As a fellow developer... Same. If you're playing a game for achievements you're doing it wrong. 🤔

I mean, I like playing games for fun, I find getting achievements a side objective, but it keeps me replaying the ganw until I unlock them all, and even then, once I unlock them all, I'll still replay that game for its fun replayability or just how good it is.

  38. Ma,I can understand achievements for when, you know, you ACTUALLY achieve something. Like something difficult or a funny choice or whatever.

But you will never catch me caring about achievements in any big way.

    0
  39. Ngl i most hate achievements.

Most I've encountered really spoil the game, ESPECIALLY through mechanics, like "unlock the final upgrade/character" like.. yep thanks for telling me that one guy who's supposed to join my team, will never join cuz mechanically that's not happening.

  40. I do enjoy achievements in games, but I really do not understand the mindset of people who play games solely for the achievements. Like what are you getting out of that

    1
  41. dekrd.bsky.social profile picture

People like achievements because it 1) gives the games longevity and 2) are fun. the shit for completing mainline quests is whatever but real achievements are challenges.

    0
  42. While it is undoubtedly your ship to steer as you see fit, I think it's a mistake to casually dismiss how many gamers are motivated by the existence of funny or prestigious achievements that they can share in their profile.

    0
  43. I don't pay super close attention to achievements most of the time but they can be fun too. I have most of the achievements unlocked for Garry's Mod, and the idea of putting a lil bow on it by getting all of em is neat to me 🤷

    0
  44. I mean most achievements now are two flavors:

    1. Reward hard to obtain milestones or outcomes. (Like Crusader Kings Refounding the Roman Empire)

    2. Hilarious aspects of setting or mechanics. (Like Helldivers breaking every bone in you body and surviving)

Option 2s can make a game fun

"You don't get it, I can only have fun in games if I see them as a checklist"

  46. Does steam do anything if you get achievements? I know xbox/playstation have a score rank on your account. (I even remember some people farming certain xbox games just for gamerscore)

Kinda sucks they're mandatory for console releases, even if you can take the piss with them.

    1
  47. We get the sentiment. However sometimes people are drawn in by achievements, and stay for the gameplay.

    1
  48. Had an "achievement" button deep into the settings, clicking it gives you the first achievement, the second is getting the first, the third is for getting the second, etc, so clicking a button get them all,and the last is "get all achievements", but you need itself to get it, so its impossible

    0
  49. i used to be an annoying achievement guy but have since recovered.

achievement hunters are really just fake engagement, they're not going to review your game or send it to friends, they'll just grind it out (probably ruining their own experience at the same time) and then leave forever

    1
  50. I have a couple of games on Steam. As soon as I added achievements I got criticised for them being "too grindy."

They're called achievements for a reason.

    0
  51. This has got me thinking why did I even add achievements. I think it was just cause I wanted to prove that I could to be honest lmao.

    0
  52. I mean, achievements don't have to be about doing something normal like performing a predictable task x number of times. I think the best achievements are about doing something super stupid and weird or failing hard.

So you know.. just make like 50 achievements like that. That's easy, right? Right?

    0
  53. I play games because they're fun. The only time I've ever dropped a game because of lack of achievements was AC2 on PC, but I also dropped that because it relied on UbiConn and couldn't run for five seconds without crashing

    0
  54. I think achievements can be fun in their own way. Plus there is some merit and camaraderie to them too. Like seeing that I got a 5% one - of course makes me feel cool - but it also makes me go, "Oh wow. I wonder how THEY got it?"

It's very easy to see them as a check list though.

I was thinking about copying devil daggers and adding a level 100 achievement tho

    4
  56. To play devils advocate: I’ve been playing the Tomb Raider Remaster and I love some of those achievements so far. One involves you literally performing a glitch to get an item that’s been impossible to get since 96. The guys remastering it were like: Don’t fix it, this is a history lesson.

    1
  57. Add an achievement that is auto-awarded upon first launch of the game. I don't know why this pettiness would delight me, but I can't help being the bitch I am.

    0
  58. I forget what game it was but someone added one achievement that was a ‘thanks for buying the game’ you got immediately on boot

    1
  59. I'm glad. People chasing after achievements for their profile ruin the fun of any game. I could never understand that. They're just doing chores for collecting, not enjoying.

    0
  60. Getting Over It has three achievements, which I feel like really encapsulates the spirit of the game. One is for beating the game once. One for beating the game a second time.

The third achievement? Beat the game 50 times.

  61. pleeeeease let me check a box labeled "I had fun"!! let it be reflected on my profile pleeeease!!
