Too many standard US politics courses (UG & grad) don't prepare students to understand what's happening now, b/c the perspective is basically US politics post-1965, w/ cartoon sketches of other eras.

Yes, so much of teaching US politics now requires the framing of what empirically is democracy, why is democracy normatively good for people, and are these things that are happening more consistent with democracy or one of these other forms of govt? Totally different world than 15 yrs ago.

  1. Not an academic but if i were teaching an intro polisci, law, or public policy course, i think i'd open day one with that veep clip to the effect of:

    "We can't have this discussion--we are still a nation of laws." "ish" "esque"
