Getting a PhD has nothing to do with intelligence (if intelligence is even a thing), so "PhD levels of intelligence" is meaningless.
Getting a PhD is about tenacity + curiosity, two things LLMs don't have even if you accept they are anthropomorphic.

I think the challenge for all PhD seekers is to find a dissertation topic that "advances the field." I used to tell my kids how to figure out what their teachers wanted. Some want you to regurgitate. Other to investigate; some want to see if you can integrate material. Some want you to innovate.
