And on the flip side, if your job does provide insurance, you're pretty much trapped there, regardless of bad pay, because for many people losing that coverage isn't an option.
But of course, public medical assistance is being eliminated now, so those people will just go into medical bankruptcy.

Having been on government assistance, I can tell you people don't want to be dependent on it, but it becomes a trap. There's no realistic means to climb out of the hole.
For example, if your job(s) don't provide insurance, which part time largely don't, then your only option is public assistance.

Working two or three part-time jobs in order to get enough money to cover rent and utilities and medical bills doesn't leave much time for anything else.
With part-time and gig work taking over the lower rungs of the economy, people aren't left with any real options to escape it.

Hmm, seems you're missing the point yourself. People are making sacrifices to make ends meet, it's causing them to buy packaged ultra-processed foods instead of fresh healthy ingredients, because those processed foods are cheaper, and often because they also lack the time to cook properly.

We're fighting it. Courts gave us a tiny opening, and the GOP legislature instantly caved on a compromise rather that risk letting the court draw it for them. The maps aren't good, but they aren't impossible anymore.

Oh, you have a local library? Lucky you. Isn't it so nice that your government has provided a free service for the benefit of the general public.
That's not the case for everyone, and it's getting less common as funding for public resources like that keep getting cut back and cut back.

Gerrymandering has been persistent in states of both affiliations, but it's been generally understood that the people hate it and courts frown on it, so a certain degree of subtlety has been used.
Until now, we're in mask-off election rigging, and it's Texas that's broken that seal.

And see, now you've also yanked the conversation away from the starting point. Which was that actual luxuries like $80k cars and $1.5k phones 3 times a year are somehow the norm, and thus people can afford high grocery prices.

Also, blaming the poor for their own poverty is a classic false argument. It's the flip side of ascribing skill and genius to the very rich, so it makes sense that conservatives also traditionally hold that belief. Fact of the matter is that luck is the biggest factor in both.
