This image (of an iron slave collar with distance handles) was as bad as my (early 90s) HS textbook got; vivid memory of being dumb goofball teen turning the page and going "oh. Oh shit. Jesus." and horrible imaginings from there of what kind of society that creates this and uses it.

Textbook drawing of a man in an iron collar with long handles labeled "Iron Collar for Preventing the Escape of Slaves"

Also remembering at least half the class shrugging this off.

Ancient history, too busy being self-absorbed teens, another world another time, etc. Even I reflexively felt distanced from it but it's still a picture, simple line drawing, that shows up in my brain every now & then when I fear the USA.

  1. I'm not trying to shame them, or say And So Half The Class Was Destined to be MAGA or anything, mandatory high school isn't exactly best vector to expose or teach this stuff to bored kids.

Lots of classes then and now probably watch Roots or Amistad or 12 Years a Slave, arguably more accessible.
