Theirs is a goldfish of an audience, as transient and rapidly forgetting as it takes to circle the bowl, and thus no credibility maintenance is needed

Witkoff is so clearly exhausted and desperate from this week, just puffing air with a thousand yard stare - I'm going to be honest, he's miserable and I'm loving that for him.
-
yeah, that was something to blink at for sure, lol
There's an absolutely horrible groaner of a line coming up if I recall correctly

The New York Times isn't a newspaper, it's a lifestyle brand. It's an accessory that its subscribers can flaunt to achieve their desired self-image as cultivated, sober thinkers. It is written to pair perfectly with tortoise-shell designer frames and a tastefully understated cardigan.

If otherwise perfectly gentle folks like I think of myself are also getting these now-regular bouts of absolute incandescent white-hot anger & loathing at what is happening, this pot is going to boil over before the term is out.
I fear the blood on the streets yet wonder if I will volunteer for it.

it teeters on the edge of "this is so dumb and painful it's actually a bit fun" but it doesn't take long for it to fall off into "nope, just super fucking dumb and I'm kind of angry about it", at least for me.
Cleansed the palette 48 hours later with Sinners, which I hadn't seen yet. Thank God 😘👌

That's where I've come to with all this.

I'm not trying to shame them, or say And So Half The Class Was Destined to be MAGA or anything, mandatory high school isn't exactly best vector to expose or teach this stuff to bored kids.
Lots of classes then and now probably watch Roots or Amistad or 12 Years a Slave, arguably more accessible.

Also remembering at least half the class shrugging this off.
Ancient history, too busy being self-absorbed teens, another world another time, etc. Even I reflexively felt distanced from it but it's still a picture, simple line drawing, that shows up in my brain every now & then when I fear the USA.

This image (of an iron slave collar with distance handles) was as bad as my (early 90s) HS textbook got; vivid memory of being dumb goofball teen turning the page and going "oh. Oh shit. Jesus." and horrible imaginings from there of what kind of society that creates this and uses it.
