In my house it is Cludo Settlers of Catan Ticket to ride Carcassonne Ankh-morepork Agricola Talisman Scotland Yard - Sherlock holmes And I always had a soft spot for Battleships And Monopoly (even though I really don't enjoy it now. I played it loads as a kid.

Not too old necessarily (depending on the kid) but many of the references and jokes will be lost in translation to young ears. Maybe start with Wee Free Men which is aimed at a younger audience. (Or Truckers. Which is Pratchett but not discworld. )
