Everyone who doesn’t have kids, when they talk about toddlers acting badly, is always like “when I was a kid my parents would never have put up with that” and that’s bc you don’t remember being under 5. You remember being a kid that was too old for that behavior, so they no LONGER put up with it

Sure! And cultural change is necessary - but a violent person is always more dangerous with a gun

But it illustrates the point that these tragedies are not preventable by focusing on demographics or wellness or counseling. The only thing we can control is the gun.

Was headed in right as that happened. This student wrote a few disturbing things, and I tried to escalate it. The response was always the same: we can’t do anything unless there is a specific and credible threat, or until they actually hurt someone. Now, this student never did, as far as I can tell.

I will tell you when I was teaching college I had a student who used to creep me out - they would come to all my office hours and sit there silently or barely speak, but as soon as I would try to wrap up they’d ask a meandering question. One day, they tried to block my exit. Thankfully, another TA
