  1. It'll be interesting to see how things look in the future with the reconfiguration of the RM into a special operations force. I wouldn't be surprised if 24 and 29 are eventually disbanded and their specialists are just attached to the Commandos directly (especially now that 3 Commando Bde is dead).

  2. Just to make things really complicated, this doesn't extend to infantry battalions that were attached to 3 Commando Brigade from the Army. There was an attempt to make 1/Rifles an 'Army Commando' battalion as a permanent part of 3 Commando Brigade but it just didn't work.

It's one of the reasons why the Royal Marine/USMC doesn't always work very well - the Royal Marines are their own 'arm' but beyond the RM Commandos (40, 45, and the host of specialist commandos that now exist) artillery, engineer support etc are Army units. Of course all considered 'Commandos'.

  4. It's the same with 24 Engineer Regiment who, surprise surprise, are badged Royal Engineer personnel. The Command Logistics Regiment is similar but, as I understand it, tends to have a higher proportion of Royal Marines than 24 or 29.
