Also, I'm not disputing that conspiracies could be spread via pamphlet. But Stancil is making a very specific argument without providing evidence: That the French populace was mistaken as to the material conditions at the time. I.e. that there were bread shortages that did not actually exist.

Conspiratorial thinking never went away. The error that Stancil is making is arguing that 21st C. U.S. politics has more to do with 18th C. France than the past 200 years of U.S. history.

There is a difference between what the French people experienced and the causes of their experiences.
I have no doubt that you could mislead a French peasant as to the cause of a famine. But I don't buy that French peasants believed that there was no bread when their cupboards were full.
