Trump was always a narcissistic dumbass, which can really mask the early symptoms of dementia -- Reagan was out of office by the time anybody admitted that he had it. A year ago, it could easily have looked, to the casual observer, that Trump was more "vigorous" than Biden.

One reason I have argued for a flat upper age limit on public service (potus, scotus, congress) is because elder decline is super chaotic and not always well understood, and trying to litigate, every single time, whether or not one old dude's decline is "worse" than another old dude's seems bad

I think this is a slight misread of the situation. Yes, Biden was being set up to fail from almost the first moment he took office, but also, whatever truly caused it, his poor June debate performance relative to Trump was 100% real.
I don't want to be all "but her emails" about this but with each passing day the friendly fire that took down Joe Biden feels more and more like the world's biggest self-own.

We are going to start seeing depopulation of the desert sunbelt for reasons of extreme heat, and depopulation of the subtropical sunbelt because you can't get home insurance in hurricane-prone areas.

But that means we will also see an element of the "cigarettes" response: where the health dangers/climate dangers are never treated as "official" truth, but people start to recognize them in an individual way and change their behavior accordingly.

This feels like a good time to remind everyone that a really large portion of the horrors happening right now are happening because Big Oil made the choice, back in the 1980s-90s, to run the "cigarettes" playbook on global warming.

Also, there is an emerging narrative that Biden's age alone was why his approval was so low (exit polls would argue otherwise).
