Brett Meiselas: I’m against gerrymandering, but that doesn’t mean we unilaterally disarm. Governors like Newsom and Hochul are right to fight back. Democrats tried to ban partisan gerrymandering in the Freedom to Vote Act, which also included voter ID—but not one Republican voted for it.

  1. TX gerrymandering, and the Dem response to it, show clearly where we are headed as long as we share a “democracy” with MAGA.

They cheat, we cheat in response, and the result is that the voters become irrelevant. The election is decided purely on who is a better cheater.

    That is not democracy.

    1
  2. Doesn’t change a damn thing about those machines and the MAGA ran county election boards. Smfh, why do we need to dance around a damn problem and get slapped with it 15 times before we actually correct the right problem? 🙄

  3. My MAGA neighbor gets scammed all over the place...she is so vulnerable. I wonder how many are just like her. It started when she clicked on a link through her MAGA Facebook groups.

  4. We no longer have the luxury of fairness. We have to win elections and try to stop this fascist regime.

  5. To save democracy we must protect voters. Maybe if repubs see that their gerrymandering will be met with more from dems, they might stop.

    1
  6. If it ever gets to a point that democrats have more power with gerrymandering than republicans they will pass national legislation to make districting Ai or something they will say is by the numbers and party neural.

Then like the voting system they will have Musk or similar hack it.

  7. Republican Mike Johnson sends the House home early to avoid the topic of the RELEASING THE JEFFREY EPSTEIN FILES.

TX Democrats flee the state to PRESERVE democracy and the Constitutional rights for fair voting & they're the bad guys?

Why does providing "cover" for a predator TRUMP democracy?

  8. Yes, we must fight back. WE MUST VOTE REPUBLICANS OUT OF OFFICE. They have shown us for years where their allegiances are: themselves, the ultra-wealthy and corporations.

  9. Hello, Democratic leaders, what the hell is wrong with you? Gerrymander the living hell out of your states! No mercy! Do it NOW ! Once completed, you'll be in a position of power, from which you can negotiate with Republican fascists.

    0
  10. Dems are NOT in power. The Republicans have established a playing field and are calling the shots, making the rules. They, are declaring war. An opponent calling the shots and making the rules has to be met on their terms. If they challenge blue states gerrymandering, it’s war and civility is gone.

  11. If they claim to be such patriots, why don't they trust the Constitution? They aren't patriots, they are bullies. Abbott is so in his element with an even bigger bully egging him on. The only way to beat them is to stand up against them.

Time to stop playing nice with Trump and his weaklings. Take the gloves off and we will fight to restore democratic norms. Enough is enough. 👊👊👊

  13. These are the days that will define our nation. One can choose to placate the establishment or challenge the establishment. Whether Dem or GOP. We all have a choice. Vote for values or vote for party loyalty. I hope we, as a collective body of voters, chose the former over the latter

  14. The last term the GOP did absolutely nothing. Even 'ole Roy made a speech that he was ashamed that nothing had been done.

    0
  15. It’s NOT just about mid-terms America! Their ultimate goal is a Constitutional Convention! Then Democracy is truly up for grabs! How many states do they have now? 37 is the number… I lost count at 22.🤮🆘🇺🇸🤬

  16. I don't give a shit anymore and if Dems are not willing to fight just as dirty as them to keep these people in check then they need to resign. I am tired of the kid gloves from Dems.

  17. Republicans have shown who they are and why they can't be trusted why this congress full of every bad description known. The need to be replaced never re elected in any form of government. To lie and pretend hide cover for others, all of them in and out to citizens do it shameless bunch.

  18. Every time Democrats try to cross the isle and give by partisan in the headlines REPUBLICAN VOTERS ONLY GET THE MESSAGE YEAR AFTER YEAR DEATH 👂TO THE RIGHT MESSAFE AS IF CROSSING THE ISLE NEVER HAPPENED OR HAPPENES ITS THIER FAULT WHEN REPUBLICANS FAIL. WHEN REPUBLICANS RAISE DEBTS IT'S OK CRICKETS.

  19. Thank you Governors for fighting back! 👏👏👏

Republicans chose to NOT ban gerrymandering so Democratic Governors…. Let’s go!!!

Release the Epstein files before Trump destroys it…. If he hasn’t already. He’s on the list.

    This. Is. Not. Normal.

  20. More proof that Republicans are totalitarian tools and should be eliminated from government and more ideally, the planet.

  21. This fight cannot be fought demonstrating good behavior. It’s unfortunately get in the ring and meet right where they are. Hopefully once trump is out, the maggot mess will be finished.

  22. We should also cut off the flow of money from blue to red states. No FEMA money for disasters? Fine, we'll keep it for ourselves. EO cutting off funds for science? Let the knuckle dragging red states have all the commandments in their public spaces they want, no money from us. Our kids will be smart

    1
  23. Exactly right!

The reason Rs voted against the Freedom to Vote Act is because they know they've been MUCH more aggressive at gerrymandering than the Ds-also in stacking the courts & manipulating elections.

They know, along with the Project2025 playbook, they've got all future elections in the bag.

    0
  24. It is clear that Republicans will always do everything to be able to cheat. They never supported any laws that would make the electoral process more representative , instead they will always try to biais it toward them. Playing the democracy works when rules are respected

  25. When we discuss this stuff, we need to include anyone against Trump, not just Democrats. Don't forget there are MILLIONS of registered Republicans and Independents who don't like Trump.

  26. F*ck Biden and his BS border bill! That mofo left that border wide open for 4 years! Bipartisan my ass!! We needed a New President, problem fixed!! Thank you #47 #DJT

  27. Ideally the "ban gerrymandering" agreement (interstate compact, federal law if it's somehow constitutional) needs to be in the other metaphorical hand at all times.

"You guys started this war, here's the peace treaty whenever you realize it was a bad mistake."

    0
  28. I'm likewise uneasy with the idea of gerrymandering. That said, I'm far more uneasy with things like government abductions, concentration camps, and shielding pedophiles, so if it's one or the other, then let's mander the hell out of those gerrys.

    0
  29. The only way to get bipartisan legislation ending gerrymandering is by making it no longer an advantage which is why Blue states must gerrymandering more blue districts. Fight on the field as rules are today in red states. Tx gerrymandering when Dem hav 45% of vote gives Dem 21% of seats.

    0
  30. Republicans will fight to death in order to keep gerrymandering. There would literally only be 4 republican senators and 5 republican congressmen if they didn't have gerrymandering in their pockets.

    0
  31. We can't have it both ways. Either you're democratic or you're not. Abandoning democracy would be disarming. Real power resides with the people. Even in war, there are things we won't do. We're in the streets & courtrooms. It's a grind but there's progress. You don't take down a president overnight.

  32. Meidas and Meiselas mislead even more - the Freedom to Vote Act was proposed in 2019, but Illinois and New York Democrats gerrymandered immediately after the 2020 census.

What's more, New York's version was ruled unconstitutional, as was the Texas version in 2001.

    2
  33. Meidas and Meiselas mislead readers and listeners yet again. The Freedom to Vote Act aspires to set up an 'independent commission' to decide districts.

The federal government already provides this service, and is paid for by the litigants, rather than the public.

    1
  34. I'm against guns shooting people.

But if everyone on my block has guns and they're just shooting arbitrarily when they walk out their doors, I'm getting some fucking guns and will not hesitate to shoot a bitch.

    0
  35. Exactly. Fighting gerrymandering requires bold action, not half-measures. It’s frustrating Republicans refuse to even vote for fairness. If Republicans won’t support fair voting rules, what are they protecting?

    0
  36. Texas is gerrymandering to gain 5 GOP seats. Newsom says he will redraw the maps to gain 5 blue seats. Why can't Newsom say he's going to gain 6 blue seats? You have to outdo them. If you just match them it doesn't punish them. Democrats have no backbone. You have to fight them on their own level.

    0
  37. Nobody thinks gerrymandering is good, but the Dems have GOT to stop bringing a slingshot to a machine gun fight. This is about saving our country from a flat-out COUP!

    1
  38. Where are John Kelly, Milly, Mattis, McMaster, Esper, Stanley McChrystal , Mullen, and Stavridis? Why are they not being more vocal?

    0
  39. Gerrymandering is why we get such lousy Republican representatives...that aren't civic minded.

    0
  40. Why are we surprised that the Guardians Of Paedophiles party is map-rigging in Texas? And they won't change simply because dems are outraged. Gavin Newsom has shown the way. This is the right response. Time to take a knife to this knife fight.

  42. basically vote in a majority.. so we can make laws that make gerrymandering illegal.. fight back! dont roll over let them be corrupt and expect to just walk away with it because they have no morals or ethics. make a pact.. we do this to change laws for the better..

    0
  43. Bingo. As soon as elected dems understand that republicans value holding power over holding free and fair elections, the choices for dems become clear.

    0
  44. Texas and its damn “Lost cause mythology”.

It’s time to just cut them loose.

Absorb the reps that left and give them districts in other states.

Texit that useless drain on taxpayers.

  45. Redistricting should reflect population change—not rigged maps for political gain.

  46. Why didn't Pam Bondi Prosecute Epstein?

Could Pam Bondi have prosecuted Jeffrey Epstein as Florida AG?

Legally, yes, she could have, legal experts say.

The bigger question is why she never felt compelled to do so.

    share.google/dYpZ723N0xXP...

Pam Bondi took office as Florida's first female attorney general in 2011. Epstein had gotten out of the Palm Beach County Jail two years earlier.

Could Pam Bondi have prosecuted Jeffrey Epstein when she was Florida's top legal officer?

  47. Hate the idea...but necessary under these extraordinary circumstances. But, better to attack the problem at the root. Declaration of Independence for CA, NY. No tax revenue to trump from CA, NY. Threaten Trump's MONEY FLOW. Keep democracy safe and intact in CA, NY as Trump corrupts fed.

    0
  48. It’s clear that Democrats need to gerrymander the shit out of their states until Republicans are squealing, and maybe then we can come together and ban it nationwide. It’s like an alcoholic needs to hit rock bottom first…

    0
  49. Every blue state should redraw their maps now!

Once the Trump chaos is over, independent firms should create fair maps for every state—without access to voter data like sex or ethnicity.

  50. While Oregon is fairly gerrymandered for Dems, would LOVE to see something happen to get rid of Qliff Bentz ORD-2!

  51. The have us surrounded, we need to fight fire with fire. They have shown us time and time again they don’t care about America Americans or democracy. Would you let someone harm your child without a fight? No you would use every means at your disposal. That’s where we are. We should back them 💯

    0
  52. Yeah, they voted no because today was always the plan. Just a reminder, Miller's ideal America only has 100 million people in it. If you stand back and look at their actions, every step leads to premeditated murder.

    0
  53. I think we should gerrymander to maximize the number of competitive races. In my mind, that would make the elected representatives more accountable to the electorate.

    0
  54. I feel like … this can get dangerous quickly? Texas issues arrest warrant, dem states don’t abide - there’s not gonna be an interstate standoff so Trump sends in the troops then what? It’s infuriating how avoidable all this was

    0
  55. How did we get to the point of Trump being entitled to cheat the elections but no one can fight back? When they go low we need to dig a trench under them.

    0
  56. Absolutely. Everything they do needs to be called out , questioned & challenged. They’re complete idiots but they’re calculated & evil.

    0
  57. The whole “when they go low, we go high!” Mantra was great in the Obama years, but were a LONG way from that glorious time! Now it’s “when they go low, we go lower and kick them right in the balls!!!” Norms have been destroyed, time to fight fire with fire at every step!

    0
  58. Sorry, Brett. Full sweep re-districting. We can restore norms when we clear all of these treasonous morons out of our democratic institutions.

    0
  59. All the D states from CA to MD need to redistrict NOW to make sure that ALL OF THE R seats from their states are either eliminated &/or diminished. This is a fight for democracy; and if the STATES are in control of Congress - the fight is not at a federal level. ALL D STATES REDISTRICT & remove R!

    0
  60. The best thing that could ever happen to the American democracy is if all the states were required to draw each house district to make it as even as possible between the voters of the different parties given the voting patterns of the state. Instead of 40 swing districts, there would be 300.

    1
  61. Agree. I hate gerrymandering. It’s basically cheating. BUT, right now, we CANNOT allow the GOP to cheat their way into more seats. This is a fight for frickin’ Democracy!

    0
  62. Us true red blooded, Patriotic Americans must do whatever the f*** it takes to take back our country from these f****** fascists... FIGHT FIRE WITH FIRE.... GERRYMANDER, THE F*** OUT OF THIS COUNTRY. IF THAT'S WHAT IT TAKES!

    0
  63. Instead of long winded speeches while standing on the floor of Congress or in front of the Capitol building, Democrats should SEND REPS to every red and blue state to HOLD TOWN HALLS for Democrats and Republicans alike. Flood the zone and listen to the people! Nonpartisan town halls! Do it!

    0
  64. Without partisan gerrymandering there would never be a GOP super majority ever again.

No state would be solely GOP led

They would fade into oblivion like the nightmare they are.

    0
  65. Democrat governors should gerrymander the shit out of their states. Republicans didn’t vote to ban partisan gerrymandering, so it’s fair game.

    0
  66. This is a map of Jim Jordan's district in Ohio. This is gerrymandering at it's worst.
