May be this was just a stupid mistake, but In both Al Jazeera and CBS reports, the US Embassy in Mexico shares a comment from Pentagon in which the second sentence reads far from admitting anything.
Context: Monday Trump said "Would I launch strikes on Mexico to stop drugs? It's OK with me. Whatever we have to do to stop drugs." 3 days later we plant signs on their beach saying it's US Department of Defense property & anyone entering could be searched/detained. This could have gone VERY badly.
