Just a hunch here, but it could be that reporters are covertly trying to show how far gone he is mentally. He's ranted about Swift before. Him wishing her well now shows that maybe he's not thinking straight....

As someone in college, let me tell you it's a strange time. I took a class covering topics like due process. I kept repeating to myself as I read the textbook "this doesn't apply anymore". Government accounting class going the same way. None of the norms are normal anymore.

Maybe I'm misremembering but doesn't Anna ask where he is before she leaves and was told he went off into the woods? From her point of view, he ran off so she had to do what she had to do.
