Inupiaq, scientist of host-microbe interactions, mom, runner, news junkie, not necessarily in that order. I speak for myself. She/her. Only reskeets posts with alt text. Unapologetically typo prone.

  1. Also, a friend who recently lost his parents sent me a detailed list of things to do/consider that were specific for our region. Potluck unspoken rules, when to give gifts to people who were especially supportive or who helped dig graves, what they wish they had done. That is immensely helpful!

  2. Kat's VERY right here.

"Let me know if there's anything I can do" can be sincere, but it's also kind of assigning homework to the grieving.

"I'm heading to the grocery store, do you want anything?", "Can I drop off a book I think you'll like?", "Want to come over for coffee?", etc are not.

Anyway, I wanted to write these down so I know how to support others in the future. Rather than saying call me if you need anything, I'm going to say come over for dinner tonight (or for lower 48 folks, you are invited), and I'm going to pick after work, I'll pick you up at 6, and...

  3. I also want to say thank you to people on here who offered their condolences & support. I've been trying to minimize social media (who needs to add existential dread on top of grieving?) but I have popped on here and seen your replies, read the uplifting stories, bloomscrolled, etc. Thank you 💜
