Likes words + pictures. Still here (in academia, thinking about contemporary lit, visual culture, & politics of aesthetics).

Coined the phrase "It's Adam & Eve, not Adam & Jeeves" as a [bad] argument against labour exploitation.

Salting the vibes.

  1. This is a really fun conversation, and filled with excellent movie recommendations.

I spoke to Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke about HONEY DON’T! They get into why Ethan quit directing, why he came back (the miracle of a good night’s sleep), the Bogart performance he hates, the new Naked Gun movie, and a million more movie references I wasn’t expecting. I loved this. bit.ly/4oKoMUf

Coen and Cooke talk about their influences for 'Honey, Don't,' what they're working on, and why the Coen Brothers aren't directing together right now.

  2. This is conservative ideology boiled down to its core: focus on “better [cheaper] product” that, in the pursuit of this short-term goal, destroys the very things that make an institution what it is and, in the medium- to long-term, leaves this institution open to abuse and degradation.

Further quote from Calandra: "If it looks like we can deliver the product better, provide better outcomes for students, better resources for teachers, and give parents certainty, and if that means eliminating trustees, then I'm going to do it," he said."

  3. The most important part of this article, to me, is the end.

It challenges a false binary between “long COVID” and “everyone else.”

    Maybe it's a spectrum... 🧵 (1/5)

  4. Hey look another reason to hate Paul Calandra!

Ford Government plans to wipe out Trustees at ALL public school boards. Guess they don’t like the advocacy & transparency! Edu Minister Calandra: “I don't foresee a situation where governance of our English public schools remains the same," www.cbc.ca/news/canada/... #onted #onpoli

Ontario's education minister says the way schools are governed in the province is "outdated" and that, as he pursues a review, he's open to eliminating elected trustees altogether.

  5. This is slowly becoming visible even to an untrained eye. Pay attention to people talking about how tired they are, their brain fog, etc.

Researchers told me that, compared with pre-pandemic times, people are living with more inflammation and immune disruption now, whether they have long COVID or not.

Months later, Akiko Iwasaki's final line still echoes in my head: “the entire world is pretty much the convalescent control.”

  6. IMPORTANT article + thread.

It’s never too late to start being careful. Visit places in off-peak hours, ask venues about their ventilation system, sit on the patio whenever possible, get your booster, mask up, and stay at home when you’re sick.

  7. Shoutout to the Air Canada workers for showing how much of a paper tiger the government forced back to work bullshit is and showing hopefully many more people that.
