because they don't tell you in the head or sub-head: the brand is DermaRite. there are specific products & batch numbers in the article

Hand soaps are now being recalled because they can cause serious infection including sepsis and death.

In β€œhealthy” individuals with minor cuts they will likely cause localized infection, but in immune compromised people it could be fatal.

Truly the worst timeline:

A number of soap products sold nationwide are being recalled over concerns that using them could result in "serious and life-threatening infections."

  1. FDA link is here:

For some reason they're listing it as a "terminated recall" which makes no sense.

  2. Gotta love the clickbait for shit like this. Let me guess, I have to subscribe, sign in with Google, accept all cookies, etc. etc. in order to read the article to figure out if my hand soap might kill me.

  3. Thank you for this. What makes this worse, even beyond the fact that it's happening, is that these are dispenser soap refills. Unless it has a window showing you the brand, any random public bathroom might have these. Check the dispenser BEFORE you go.

  4. Oh goodness. A lot of the soap brands sold in stores around here are American ones so this may impact Canada too but not me specifically (I usually buy Ivory brand soap bars and that's what I have right now it seems).

  5. So like, this is concerning as this is the sort of thing you should wash your hands with when you or someone in your home is immunocompromised.

But soap and water is still effective for most people and should, in fact, be your go-to. Just do it the way you learned during the pandemic.

  6. It feels like bacteria shouldn't be able to survive in a hand soap β€” is this a situation (like with isopropanol) where bacteria are killed by [a thing] + water, but are not killed by the thing in isolation?

  8. I was about to repost the story elsewhere, saying, "What a good thing firms are self-regulating," when it occurred to me that there are people who would take that as straight and nod their heads.

  9. And the editor in me would quibble at these antibacterial washes being called β€œsoaps” in a headline. True soaps do not clean via antibacterial chemicals. They dissolve proteins and fats, break surface tension, so as to rinse disease-causing microbes away, as opposed to killing them outright.
