What would you call the story, interpretation or idea the designer is bringing to the game? I have been recently talking about subtext, especially when asked about Onoda, but maybe that's just a theme that's kind of hidden? I'm talking about your own view of a subject, reflected in the game.

I think Narrative is fitting. Although its also kind of a loaded term with different meanings that are used all at the same time. OtoH maybe its more like the model I have used, or the axioms/hypothesis Im using. I mean the author is dead anyway, but it can be fun to see which models they used.
